Magic Coloured Milk

Magic Coloured Milk

Seriously, this is worth the 5 seconds it takes to set it up.  Your children will really enjoy watching this.

You will need:
A bowl
Milk (preferably full fat)
Food Colouring
Dish washing liquid (e.g. Sunlight)

Instructions:
Put a cup of milk into the bowl
Add a few drops of each food colouring
Add a few drops of dish washing liquid – no stirring necessary

Sit back and watch …you can also get a tooth pick and move the colour around. It’s fascinating!

After Googling it, I found out that this happens because milk has fat in it and the food colouring floats on top of the fat. The fat is all connected with bonds. Think of it like the little pieces of fat all holding hands with each other. Dish soaps are used on greasy or oily dishes because it breaks the bonds in fats allowing them to separate. When you add the dish soap to the milk, the fat separates and moves making your magic al milk art! (source: sciencemadefun4kids.com)
