Why I Wake Up Early

I get asked A LOT on Snapchat (happymumnz) about why I get up so early. I usually try and respond individually, but finally I thought “I should probably write about this so everyone understands”.

I wake up early, because my kids are early risers. They have been, and always will be; and so was I as a kid.

My Mum used to tell me that I would wake at 5am every single day until I went to school. Given that my Mum had 4 kids under 5, that would have been exhausting. And just like me, she would get up before the kids would, to get a heard start on the day.

And that’s EXACTLY why I do it: to get a head start on the day.

I am a creature of habit, and HATE being thrown into unknown situations – especially when those unknown situations are kids. If I wake up WITH my kids, I feel like my life is out of control; like I don’t know what I’m doing.

Also, I love a little bit of time to myself. I love making a coffee, sitting down and trawling through Facebook. I love watching something trashy or romantic on Netflix. I just love relaxing knowing my kids aren’t awake.

So I wake up at 4am, and have some time to myself before the chaos descends from the bedrooms.

When my kids were 3 and under, they would regularly wake at 4.30am. It wasn’t until we bought them Gro-Clocks, that they started staying in their rooms a little longer. Both kids now wake up around 6am, but stay in their rooms until 6.30am.

You guys often ask “but what time do you go to bed” … well that’s usually about 830pm, because I’m usually wasted by then. Which is another reason on the weekend, I take advantage of my husband being around, and take a nap. So that I can recharge myself for the night, so that we can spend some time together watching TV, or chatting.

I definitely get tired during the day, but nothing coffee can’t fix, or an early night.

Oh and if you’re wondering – yes at ages 3 and 5 my kids STILL wake up during the night. But I am lucky that my husband deals with them during this time. Thankfully the only reason they’re waking is because of nightmares … better than thinking it’s time to get up!
