6 Fun Ways To Eat Nectarines!

** SCROLL DOWN FOR GIVEAWAY **

Summer is well and truly here and one thing that is part of a quintessential summer is FRUIT.

Nectarines are one of these fruits.

Nutritionally, nectarines are a powerhouse.  A normal nectarine is about 120-140 grams in weight and will cost you only 60 calories. In return you get a lusciously sweet snack with  1.5 grams of fiber. Nectarines are a good source of vitamin C and also have good vitamin A and potassium values. They are also abundant in antioxidants.  So an all-round amazing fruit!

Here are six fun and exciting ways to eat your deliciously refreshing Nectarines:

Nectarines 051. NECTARINE & STRAWBERRY ICE BLOCKS
1 cup of strawberries (diced)
1 cup of sliced nectarine (stones removed)
1 tablespoon of sugar (to help them set)

Blend all ingredients, and carefully pour into ice block holders.  Freeze overnight and ENJOY!

If you want, you can peel the nectarines, but I didn’t, it it didn’t make a difference with the end result.

Nectarines 032.  GRILLED NECTARINES

These were my personal favourite – great for a snack and/or dessert.

Peel and cut 4 Hunny Yellow Nectarines in halves..

Mix 1/3 cup sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of melted butter over each half of nectarine, and then sprinkle with the sugar / cinnamon mix.  Then place flat-side up in the oven, on a tray.  Grill for 10 minutes and watch for them to be golden.

Nectarines 063.  SORBET

When nectarines go soft, don’t throw them out. Now’s the time to make a sorbet!

Remove the stone and slice the nectarine.  Pop into a blender (add any other fruit you want!), add a teaspoon of lemon juice (or honey) and then blend well until smooth.

Split out into cups and freeze. OM NOM NOM!

Nectarines 044.  NECTARINE & STRAWBERRY FRUIT SALAD

3 large Hunny Yellow Nectarines cut into medium sized chunks (small enough to eat)
10 fresh strawberries, stems removed, quartered
1 Tbsp honey
1 teaspoon lemon juice
4 leaves fresh mint, thinly sliced

Gently mixed the fruit together in a bowl, and add the honey and lemon juice.  Cover and let it sit for 15-20 minutes.  Before serving, add some mint leaves and mix together.

You can also add a little sugar if it’s a wee bit too tart for your liking.

Nectarines 025.  NECTARINE SMOOTHIE

3 Hunny Yellow Nectarines (chopped)
1 cup plain yogurt
1 cup milk
1 tbsp honey

Put in your blender, and blend. TOO EASY!

Nectarines 016. FRUIT PLATTER

Hunny Yellow Nectarines
Strawberries
Blueberries
Watermelon

Cut all fruits up as you please, and put on a platter for your family to enjoy! 😀

The Yummy Fruit Company actually have three different types of Nectarines available to us New Zealanders. They grow these in Hawkes Bay and Central Otago orchards: Hunnys (yellow flesh, sweet-eating), Classics (yellow flesh, traditional flavour) and Pearls (white flesh). All 3 nectarines have distinctive and unique flavour profiles.

The Hunny Nectarines (which I have used above) are actually quite different to the normal nectarine flavour, which can be a bit tart.  These are a mellow flavoured Nectarine, which have a low acidity, ultimately making it taste sweeter.

You can get your delicious Yummy Fruit Company Nectarines from New World, Pak N Save and Four Square – get to it!
