5 Tips To Slow Down The Apple Browning Process

My kids LOVE apples – they probably eat about 3 apples a day EACH. One of these is cut up an apple and popped into their lunchbox. My kids don’t mind if they go brown during the day, but I know not all kids are like that. So I’ve looked into some ways you can slow this process down.

Now please remember, these tips do not stop the apple browning. This browning process is naturally occuring due to the apple being cut and exposed to air. The only way to stop it from browning, is to not cut it.

EXTRA TIP: when soaking any kind of fruit, they will float and it can be hard to soak the top fruit. To combat this, place a paper towel over the top. The liquid will soak into the paper towel and get the top fruit wet.

1. PLAIN WATER

Once you have cut your apples up, immediately soak them completely in a bowl of water . Don’t forget the paper towel trick I mentioned above. Soak for about 10 minutes. Drain the and pop into the lunchbox.

2. SODA WATER / SPARKLING WATER

As per tip 1, but use sparkling / soda water instead of plain water.

3. LEMON JUICE & WATER

As per tip 1, but add a tablespoon of lemon juice. There is a known correlation between an acidic fruit being able to slow the browning process down better than just plain water. So if your kids don’t mind the taste of lemon juice, this could be the option to go for.

4. HONEY & WATER

As per tip 1, but add a tablespoon of honey. Just like the lemon juice, honey is a natural preservative; and a great alternative to the lemon juice.

5. SALT & WATER

As per tip 1, but add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the water. Ensure you rinse thoroughly after soaking for 10 minutes though. I personally haven’t tried this method, but according to TheKitchn, this method proved to be the best at slowing down the browning process.

The process I use when I feel like it, is usually just plain water. Mainly because my kids seem to be able to taste the smallest of differences in the fruit. If I ever had to add something to the water, it would definitely be honey.

If you have tried any of these methods, which do you recommend or which do you find works the best? Let me know below!
